Update on Courthouse Security and Acceptable ID

October 1, 2015
Due to the efforts of the CCLA and the DCAO from their position on the Courthouse Security Committee, as well as that of many partner organizations in the legal community, we are pleased to announce that effective today, members of the Law Society of Upper Canada who wish to bypass security screening at the Ottawa Courthouse may do so using a valid LSUC identification card.

To bypass security, you must use the ramp to the far right at the entrance. Please inform the guard at the top of the ramp that you are a LSUC member and present your LSUC ID card. You will then be asked to pass through the magnetometer, but you will not be searched.

A few notes on LSUC identification:

  • Only LSUC members in good standing are permitted to bypass screening. Security will be provided regularly with a list of members who are under suspension or have had their licenses revoked.

  • LSUC cards with no expiration date on them will be accepted for the next four months. As of February 1, 2016, LSUC cards with no expiration date on them will not be accepted for bypass. If you wish to apply for a LSUC card, or you need to replace an older card that is without an expiration date, please follow this link. This process can be done through the mail and the cost is $15.00.

  • If you had applied for a CCLA membership on or after August 12th for the express purpose of obtaining a security pass, and you wish to have your membership cancelled, please contact Sonia Morin for refund assistance.

Additional Security Protocol Information

The Courthouse Security Committee has also passed along the following security protocol information:

  • Building access passes are issued to individual users and cannot be transferred to other persons.

  • If an individual is found using an access card that is not assigned to them, the building pass will immediately be seized and the individual will have to proceed through the security screening. The building pass will be revoked, and the individual will have to use the public security screening in order to gain access to the courthouse until the matter is resolved and the building pass is reissued.

  • Fire exit doors are to be used only for the purposes of exiting the building in an emergency.

  • Fire exit doors are not to be propped open or used as regular egress from the building as this presents a security risk.
