CCLA Real Estate Committee Update

November 20, 2013
The Real Estate Committee of the CCLA met with the Treasurer of the Law Society in June to express its many concerns relating to the current crisis facing the real estate bar in Ontario. The Treasurer expressed his opinion that this was only a local issue and would not address it without interest being shown throughout the province. Jaye Hooper, Past President of the CCLA and our Regional Representative on the Executive of The County and District Law Presidents Association, approached the CDLPA president, Janet Whitehead, and as a result, the matter was placed as an agenda item for the CDLPA Plenary which took place in Toronto last week.

Prior to the Plenary, our Real Estate Committee prepared a background paper, with much research, and that background paper was circulated to all members of CDLPA prior to the Plenary. Further, the Committee contacted all CDLPA Presidents to ask for their support at the Plenary.

I was asked, as a CCLA Trustee and solicitor, to sit on the panel for the plenary session on real estate along with Gerry Dust, Chairperson of the CCLA Real Estate Committee, and others.

I am pleased to report that CDLPA unanimously passed two resolutions during the panel discussion: the first - that CDLPA, the Law Society, LawPRO, and representatives of the real estate bar of Ontario, sit down together and address the crisis; and the second, a non-exhaustive list of issues to be addressed in relation to the crisis.

I wish to thank the Executive and entire Board of CCLA for their unwavering support of this initiative, as well as the members of the Real Estate Committee for their hard work and commitment to these issues. Finally, many thanks to Jaye Hooper for her support in gaining the attention of CDLPA.
