Firms Filling Fridges - October 1 to 31, 2024

Agency partners are seeing more new Canadians, more two-parent households, and more employed people and families.

Food insecurity is increasing—the number of people in Ottawa experiencing food insecurity has more than doubled since 2017, from 1 in 15 to 1 in 7. Nearly 150,000 people in our city are food insecure.

With a 22% increase in the number of visits to the network from 2022 to 2023, and reduced funding (less than 2% of the Ottawa Food Bank funding comes from any level of government) Food banks try to keep up, but in this current climate, it’s overwhelming.

Once again, the CCLA is calling on the Ottawa legal community to lend its support to the Ottawa Food Bank.

For the entire month of October, support the 2024 Firms Filling Fridges campaign.

<span style="font-family: 'Open Sans';
Get your ticket for the 20th Annual Lawyer Play

From June 5-9, GCTC will host 23 local lawyers as they bring their talents to a very different courtroom: the stage. The premise of the play is simple: an Ottawa radio station must scramble to put on a cobbled-together version of The War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells.

Will the audience be tricked into thinking that aliens are attacking the capital? Will the lawyers accidentally shout "OBJECTION" and lose track of their lines? There's only one way to find out.

Remember, buying a ticket to the Lawyer Play not only gives you access to a fancy gala evening, but also to a handy tax receipt! Tickets are $110, with a $60 tax receipt. Along with some of the city’s top caterers, as always, there will be beer, wine and spirits for sampling during the intermissions. Don’t miss out on treats from Coconut Lagoon, Harwood Estate Winery, North of 7 Distillery and much more!

You don’t want to miss cameo performances from prominent community members:

Thursday June 6: Sheila Bayne, Ted Mann, Brian Parnega

Friday June 7: Madam Justice Lise Parent, Madam Justice Heather Williams

Saturday June 8: Laurence Wall, Ian Stauffer, Madam Justice Giovanna Roccamo

Tickets can be purchased by calling our box office at 613-236-5196 or just pop by the corner of Wellington and Holland. You can also visit us online to purchase tickets and find out more about our cast and creative team.

Notice of Focus Groups and Research Consultation for the Dialogue on Licensing

Convocation, the Law Society of Ontario’s governing body, decided to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the lawyer licensing process following its 2016 review of the Pathways Pilot Project which included introduction of the Law Practice Program and enhancements to the Articling Program. The goal of this analysis is to formulate long-term recommendations for an appropriate and sustainable licensing system for lawyers in Ontario. In the spring of 2017, the Law Society engaged directly with the professions and stakeholders and held a series of facilitated in-person and webcast discussions about the realities, challenges and opportunities of lawyer licensing. Drawing on those discussions and extensive research, the Law Society’s Professional Development and Competence Committee developed four options for pathways to licensure.

To continue the consultation with stakeholders, the Law Society has retained Strategic Communications Inc. (Stratcom) to conduct focus groups about the licensing process and the four options for licensure. As part of the consultation, Stratcom will be holding focus groups in Hamilton, London, Windsor, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Ottawa or Toronto. Law students, licensing candidates and practising lawyers are invited to participate in focus groups to talk about their experiences at law school, during the licensing process and while practising, as well as to provide input on the four options for pathways to licensure.

The focus groups will take place in October 2018. Reasonable, in-province travel expenses will be reimbursed and a light meal will be provided at the focus groups.

If you are a law student, a licensing candidate or a practising lawyer and are interested in participating in a focus group in Hamilton, London, Windsor, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Ottawa or Toronto, please click the link below to answer a few questions.

Please respond before 5:00 pm on October 3, 2018.

Only a small team of professional researchers at Stratcom will have access to individual responses. Stratcom is bound by federal privacy rules, regulations and standards imposed by Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the Market Research and Intelligence Association (MRIA). The data gathered at the focus groups will be used in aggregate form only by Stratcom for reporting purposes.

Please note that not everyone who expresses interest in participating will be able to participate as space is limited. Researchers need to ensure they have a balanced mix of participants. If you are selected to participate, Stratcom will contact you by phone.

Your contribution to this project is important, and will assist the Committee in developing recommendations for Convocation’s consideration regarding lawyer licensing; we hope that you will consider participating.

Looking for a charity partner for 2019!

Each year, the annual Lawyer Play fundraiser raises much-needed funding for the Great Canadian Theatre Company, a registered charitable organization, as well as for a designated charity partner which changes from year to year.

The designated charity partner will receive not less than $10,000.00, with the amount of the ultimate payment being calculated once the final net proceeds of the production are known. The more sponsorships we secure and the more tickets we are able to sell, the more money the charity partner is able to realize!

As the chosen Charity Partner, we ask that you commit to having a representative attend at each performance to participate in the pre-show speeches and for the cheque presentation at the final performance.

If you are involved with, or know of, a registered charity that you would like us to consider, the Committee would be very pleased to hear from you.

CCLA/GCTC Annual Lawyer Play Fundraiser - Looking for a Charity Partner for 2018!

In early November, the Lawyer Play Committee will be selecting the charity partner for the Lawyer Play that will be taking to the stage in the spring of 2018. If you are involved with, or know of, a registered charity that you would like us to consider, the Committee would be very pleased to hear from you.

Please send us an email to arussell@kellysantini.com on or before October 25, 2017 with the following information:

•         the name of the organization;
•         a little bit about the organization’s objectives and mandates;
•         why the organization would be a good choice;
• and how the organization would intend to use the funds raised.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 613-670-8008.
As well various offices in the Courthouse also set up their own individual collection points.
