Coming May 31 - Annual Lawyer Play Goes Audio!

Whoever said video killed the radio star? We couldn’t agree less over here at GCTC, where we
are excitedly bringing to life the energy and entertainment of the old school Radio Show. Under
the wonderful direction of Kate Smith, Artistic Director of Skeleton Key Theatre, the talented
crew at GCTC, as well as the incredible, multifaceted lawyers taking to the airwaves, we are
happy to announce the two show line up: Agatha Christie’s The Case of the Careless Client, the
story of famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot unravelling a murder case, and the American
detective Dick Tracy in Case of the Big Top Murders, where Tracy and friends must jump
through hoops to tame a brutal criminal.

GCTC is also thrilled to announce that proceeds from ticket sales will be shared with the Ottawa
Community Foundation and directed to the organization’s Rapid Response Fund. As its name
suggests, this fund responds to the immediate needs of our community and is particularly
appreciated during this difficult time.

Project director, Kate Smith, has this to say about the CCLA volunteers who have once again
stepped up to create a work of art:

"I continue to be amazed by the talent and dedication of this fabulous group of performers from
the legal community. Having had the pleasure of working with many of them over several years
now, it is a joy watching them grow as actors, and also to be welcomed into this special "family"
that they create every year. Throughout this process, they have remained adaptable and
understanding, and each actor comes to our virtual rehearsals with a sense of humour and
generosity of spirit. They have persevered, and their commitment to GCTC and their community
has not wavered in the face of the pandemic."

While we have faced some challenges along the way, GCTC and the Lawyer Play committee
are determined to bring this fantastic event back this year, and on May 31, we plan to take your
(online) airwaves by storm. Your ticket will give you online access to these pre-recorded radio
plays, allowing you to listen at your leisure.

"Even in the middle of this difficult time, these CCLA volunteers have stepped forward without
hesitation. The generosity of spirit continues to overwhelm me and I will always be grateful for
this partnership. Thank you, CCLA." - Eric Coates, Artistic Director of GCTC

This year, we are happy to launch our Pick-Your-Price ticket model, making these radio plays
accessible to a broader audience. All ticket prices that include a donation will be issued a
charitable tax receipt for the 2021 year. Two great shows, supporting the community and a tax
deduction? What could be better!

The options are as follows:

$10 Ticket

$30 Ticket (includes $20 tax receipt)

$50 Ticket (includes $40 tax receipt)

$70 Ticket (includes $60 tax receipt)

Tickets will be on sale starting Friday, May 14th, and will be available online at www.gctc.ca as
well as over the phone through our box office at 613-236-5196.

Mark your calendars: May 8 - 9, 2015 at Fairmont Le Château Montebello!

This year, the conference agenda has been expanded to two full days, with the goal of creating a program that meets your total CPD requirements for 2015 in one weekend. We anticipate significant judicial participation that is unmatched by other family law CPD programs in Ontario.

Accommodations for the conference will be available at the Fairmont and at surrounding hotels. Alternatively, the conference is only a fifty minute drive from downtown Ottawa should you wish to commute each day.

More than a CPD exercise, the Institute is also a fabulous social event that fosters an opportunity for collegiality that is unsurpassed for the Family Law Bar. Given the work that we do, enhancing relationships among counsel not only makes a difficult task more pleasant, but is of enormous value to our clients.

Stay tuned to CCLA emails for program, registration, and accreditation information as it becomes available!

Save the Date for HeadStart Ottawa: Legal Research for Articling Students!

If you will be taking on any articling students this summer,
mark August 8th, 2014 in your calendar! The CCLA Library is presenting a
half-day session on legal research, designed exclusively for new articling
students. Our annual program covers the research tools students have available
(either through our Library or online) that will be vital to the research they
will take on during their articling year.

The cost of the session will be $25.00, and will also include your student’s
CCLA Membership for the articling term (which gives members 24/7 access to our
library, among other great perks). Seating will be limited, so don’t delay in
registering your student with us! If you’d like us to add your student to the
RSVP list, please send us an email.

Also back this year will be our free Articling Student Luncheon. This luncheon
will take place after HeadStart, and will be held in the CCLA Library. If your
student won’t be able to make the session, they are still invited to lunch –
we’d love to meet them!

Much more information will be coming, so watch for details over the next few
months!
