The CCLA Paralegal Committee is pleased to present a program highlighting the fundamentals of opening your own practice.

Katherine Smith, Licensed Paralegal, will discuss the systems and procedures you should have in place when opening a practice.  Katherine will discuss her experience with opening her own practice and the checklists she used to help her succeed.

Paula Callaghan of Callaghan Paralegal and Troy Elliott from Logan Katz LLP, Chartered Accountants, will discuss what you need to know about trust accounts and provide helpful information about taxes.

Derek Nicholson, Lawyer, will discuss hourly rate retainers and contingency fee retainers.  He will also discuss the efforts by the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) to encourage consistency with retainers.  Derek will also speak about the concept of a short Contingency Fee Retainer and will have a copy of OTLA’s version to discuss with attendees.

Paralegals, lawyers, articling students and paralegal students are all welcome.
