CCLA Awards Recipients & AGM Registration

The CCLA is honoured to announce the recipients of the three awards we will be presenting at our AGM and Awards Dinner.

The Carleton Medal - Justice Denis Power

The Carleton Medal is given to those who are most deserving of recognition for great diligence, high ideals and outstanding leadership in the practice of law. Those who will receive the medal will have made a significant contribution to the profession of law, whether as a solicitor in effectively performing services in that position, or as a barrister in attaining an excellent reputation in the courts, or as an academic, or for a single act of notable distinction. The medal will be awarded only to members or former members of the CCLA.

The Gordon F. Henderson Award - E. Jane Murray

The CCLA established the Gordon F. Henderson Award to honour a lawyer who is a member or former member of the CCLA and who, during the past year, has made a significant contribution to the welfare of the community by performing charitable services on behalf of the community. In recognition of their great dedication and high ideals in service to the community, each recipient will receive the Gordon F. Henderson Award and a $1,000 donation will be made by the CCLA, on their behalf, to the charity or charities of the recipient’s choice.

The Regional Senior Justice Award - Trevor Brown

The CCLA established the Regional Senior Justice (RSJ) Award in 2003 to honour lawyers in practice ten (10) years or less, who are members or former members of the CCLA, and who have made an outstanding contribution as a litigator or solicitor within the profession and/or outside the profession by making an outstanding contribution to the community. In recognition of the recipient’s contribution, the CCLA will donate the sum of $1,000 to be paid to the charity or charities of the recipient’s choice.

Congratulations to all of our award recipients!

    Articling Task Force Consultation

The Law Society is undertaking a review of the place and role of Articling in the process of licensing new lawyers in Ontario and there are two upcoming opportunities to make your views known - Monday, February 6, 2012 at 5:00 PM or Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 5:00 PM.

In December 2011, the Law Society released the Articling Task Force Consultation Report. The Law Society is seeking comments from the profession on the Report. Comments are due by March 15, 2012. The CCLA will be making a formal written submission in response to the Report and is seeking input from members of the profession in the Ottawa region.

The Law Society has become concerned about the issue of articling placement shortages and the fact that the inability to secure an articling position is becoming a barrier to entry into the profession. It is also concerned that there is no current system in place to ensure that the articling experience is reasonably consistent for all articling students and that articling is providing students with the practical skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level lawyers.
