C. Jill Alexander
President

Jill was called to the Ontario bar in 1999.  She obtained her law degree from the University of Ottawa and graduated magna cum laude.  

Jill is a partner at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (“BLG”).  She practises in BLG’s Ottawa office with the Insurance & Tort Liability group.  Jill's insurance practice is varied and includes handling matters involving personal injury, property damage, product liability, municipal liability and professional liability.  She also prosecutes subrogated claims and regularly provides coverage opinions.  In 2008 Jill was honoured to receive the Regional Senior Justice Award from the County of Carleton Law Association.  Established in 2003, the RSJ award recognizes one lawyer annually with 10 years of experience or less who has made an outstanding contribution as a litigator or solicitor within the legal profession as well as outside of the profession by making an outstanding contribution to the community.

Jill has been invited to organize, moderate and speak at many continuing legal education events, including the County of Carleton Law Association’s annual Civil Litigation Conference.

First elected to the CCLA’s Board of Trustees in 2010, Jill has been a member of the Executive Committee since 2014.  During her time with the Board, Jill has participated in several significant CCLA initiatives and has served on many CCLA committees including the Membership Committee and the Website Committee.  Since 2014 she has been co-chair of the CCLA’s Continuing Legal Education Planning Committee.

When she is not working Jill enjoys spending time with her husband and kids at her cottage in Norway Bay, Quebec.  During the winter months, Jill and her husband spend most of their leisure time volunteering for the Calabogie Ski Racing Club or shuttling their kids to ski racing events.  On occasion, they get to ski together!

Treasurer

Ted Mann, Managing Partner at Mann Lawyers, LLP, has over 30 years of experience in the practice of law. He is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School, and was called to the bar in Ontario in 1980. He practised law in Toronto and P.E.I. before moving to Ottawa in 1987, and has practised in Ottawa ever since. Ted has been an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law since 2000, where he teaches Bankruptcy and Insolvency.

He has been an active member of Opera Lyra Ottawa and has performed major roles at the Savoy Society, Orpheus, Ottawa Little Theatre and Tara Players. Ted has provided his acting abilities in support of the Great Canadian Theatre Company, taking leading roles in the annual G.C.T.C. fundraising Lawyer Play.

Ted enjoys running, cycling, snowshoeing, skate-skiing and weight-training, and swims with the Y Master’s Swim Club at the downtown YMCA. Ted also sits on the Board of Directors of The Canadian Guide Dogs for The Blind and the Ottawa Chamber Music Society.

He was a board member with the Carleton County Law Association until this year when he was elected Secretary.

Secretary

Craig O’Brien is a partner with Nelligan O’Brien Payne. He works exclusively in civil litigation, with an emphasis on commercial and construction litigation, insurance defence and professional liability litigation.

Craig frequently represents major insurance companies, and has been involved in a variety of insurance claims. These include personal injury litigation, building and construction deficiency and home inspection claims, improper road and sidewalk maintenance claims, environmental spill claims, and occupiers’ liability claims. His practice includes representing insurers in accident benefits, arbitrations, and litigation.

Craig has appeared before the Small Claims Court of Ontario, the Ontario Superior Court, the Divisional Court, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and various administrative tribunals, including the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.

He is a graduate of Carleton University (B. Hum(H)), and the University of Ottawa (L.L.B.)

Past President

D. Lynne Watt was called to the Bar in 1994. She attended the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law (and was awarded the Gold Medal in her graduating year of 1992). She articled with Osler in Ottawa, clerked at the Federal Court of Appeal, and then won a Harold G. Fox Scholarship to spend a year in Chambers in London. Upon her return to Ontario, she joined McCarthy Tétrault where she practiced commercial litigation for 10 years before moving to Gowlings in 2006. She is a partner in the Advocacy Dept. of Gowling WLG, practising in their Ottawa office. Her areas of expertise are commercial litigation, copyright and appellate advocacy. She is the leader of Gowling WLG's Supreme Court of Canada Services Group.

Lynne has been a member of the board of trustees of the County of Carleton Law Association since 2009. Lynne was previously a member of the board of directors of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute from 2006 to 2014 where she sat on the Executive Committee and served as chair of its Government Relations Committee. She was also formerly on the board of directors of the Canadian Hearing Society from 1997 to 2002, serving as chair of that board from 2000 to 2002.

Rick Haga

Executive Director

(Ex-Officio)

Rick has been the Executive Director of the CCLA since August of 2008. Rick is a seasoned association management professional with over 20 plus years of experience in managing associations at the local and national levels. A graduate of the University of Ottawa in 1981 with a BSc and trilingual (English, French & Dutch). Prior to joining the CCLA Rick was the National Executive Director for the Lifesaving Society (Royal Life Saving Society Canada) who’s mission is to prevent drownings and water-related injury. During his tenure with the Lifesaving Society Rick worked at the local, provincial, national and international levels to achieve the Society’s mission. Rick was also Senior Officer, Water Safety Services at the National Office for the Canadian Red Cross Society for 2 years.

Prior to his career in association management Rick managed aquatic facilities, supervised aquatic facility managers along with liaising with school boards and aquatic sports groups for the City of Ottawa for 7 years. He is a member of the Canadian Society of Association Executives and has volunteered with a number of organizations at the local, provincial, national and international levels.

In his spare time Rick is active in a masters swim club and enjoys cycling.

Rick is passionate about the Mission and Objectives of the CCLA to promote justice and advancing the interests of its members in partnership with an extremely dedicated and talented group of staff and volunteers!

Trustees

 

Rosalind Conway is a Certified Specialist in criminal law. She holds a Masters Degree in English from Carleton University, graduated from the University of Toronto Law School, and articled with McCarthy & McCarthy (now McCarthy Tetrault). Rosalind clerked for the High Court (now the Superior Court of Justice) and was an Assistant Crown Attorney in Ottawa. She has been in private practice since 1988, and became a Deputy Judge of the Small Claims Court in 2014.

She is a past president of both the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and the Bora Laskin Law Society. She wrote "A Criminal Mind" almost monthly for the Law Times. Rosalind regularly mentors students and lawyers.

Rosalind received the President's Award from Women and the Law, and she received a Community Builder Award from the United Way for her fundraising for the Ottawa Food Bank.On behalf of the CCLA, she worked on the Articling Programme to create a dozen placements, and has attended meetings with Legal Aid Ukraine.

Much of her spare time is spent playing tin whistle, Irish flute and fiddle: she is a long-standing member of the Ottawa Ceili Band, and she plays in various sessions, including her own at Patty's Pub in Old Ottawa South. Rosalind speaks conversational Russian.

Andrew Ferguson

 

Andrew was called to the Bar in 2009 and is now a partner with MBC Law Professional Corporation practicing in construction law, bankruptcy and insolvency, and general civil litigation.

Andrew's construction law practice includes construction liens, delay and impact claims, contractual disputes, bond claims, trust claims, and deficiency claims. Andrew regularly represents suppliers, subtrades, general contractors, construction managers, and owners. He often guest lectures at the Ottawa Construction Association.

As part of Andrew's bankruptcy and insolvency practice, he represents creditors, debtors, and trustees in bankruptcy. His general litigation experience also includes property disputes, contractual disputes, and employment matters.

Andrew completed his undergraduate degree at Carleton University, where he graduated with highest honours in 2003. Following his undergraduate studies, Andrew worked for several years in golf course construction and renovation. He obtained his LL.B. from the University of Ottawa in June 2008 and was voted Class Representative of the English Common Law Class of 2008 by his peers.

Originally from Montreal, Mark attended McGill University where he obtained his B.A with Honours in Political Science and History. He also attended Concordia University where he obtained a Certificate in Comparative International Politics. Mark then completed his Law Degree at the University of Ottawa and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1989.

Mark began his legal career with the Ottawa Office of Blaney, McMurtry, Stappels (later McGovern Roine) before moving on to Rock, Talarico, Wong and then Segal, Talarico, Wong & Habib where he carried on a general law practice from 1996 to 2008. In 2009, he joined the firm of Low, Murchison (later Low, Murchison, Radnoff) where his practice shifted almost exclusively to the areas of Real Estate and Corporate/Commercial Law.

In 2014, Mark open his own law practice at Habib & Associates where he carries on a boutique real estate and corporate/commercial law practice.

In addition to his duties as a second year Trustee on the CCLA Board of Trustees, Mark has been actively involved in the CCLA Real Estate Lawyers Committee where he and his colleagues are working to hard to advance the interests of real estate lawyers in the Province.

Mark is fluently bilingual in the english and french languages.

Lawrence graduated from McGill University and was called to the Bar in 1986. He is a partner with Kelly Santini. Lawrence Silber specializes in corporate/commercial law with particular expertise in income tax, estate and succession planning. He advises clients on a broad range of business matters and practices residential and commercial real estate, including purchases, sales and refinancing. Lawrence deals extensively with families in business together in order to provide a comprehensive solution to difficulties that arise in family businesses trying to balance family and business.

Lawrence is a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (Ottawa chapter) Board of Directors and has been an instructor in the Business Law section of the Ontario Bar Admission Course. He currently teaches real property law for the Ontario Real Estate Association and lectures frequently on wills and estate matters. Lawrence has been on the Board for 2 terms, and has served on the CCLA Solicitors Conference for several years, 3 as co-chair.
